“I initially created these smaller paintings which would eventually turn into large 30”x40”versions of these precious children from my trip to Colombia with Lighthouse Medical Missions in 2020, where I served as a photographer. The significance of the large scale is simply to make the unseen seen. The conviction to do this came when I realized how small I had initially painted this child who comes from an already “invisible” group of people. From 1Corinthians 1: 26-31 we know that God loves to use the unlikely people of this world to reveal his glory no matter what circumstances or background we come from. We also know that God loves children for he calls us to become like them in faith (Matthew 18:1-5). Yukpa are an indigenous tribe in Colombia/Venezuela who are surviving off of very little to nothing. Especially at the time of our visit, due to the government crisis in Venezuela which stripped many of their homes and familiarities and left them to scramble for their lives. The children in these situations are somehow always still a bundle of love and joy that words cannot express. However, there are moments when their expressions reflect their reality. If given just a bit of hope and the love of God, I wonder what possibilities the future might hold for these children. A portion of the proceeds from sales of these pieces will go to support Lighthouse Medical Missions.”
